Company Information

Punjab Thalassaemia Prevention Programme (PTPP) is an initiative of the Government of Punjab. It aims for a thalassaemia free Pakistan.

The project has been conceived as part of overall preventive strategy of the Government in the health sector. Beta-thalassaemia is one of the most common genetically determined hematological disorders in the country. The carrier prevalence rate for Beta-thalassaemia is 5.4% of the total population. The cultural tradition of consanguineous marriages in Pakistan has resulted in the increase in number of thalssaemia affected children, making it a significant public health problem. Since there is no effective treatment available for this disorder, the only hope lies in adopting a preventive program on the lines pursued by countries like Cyprus and Iran, which has resulted either in complete control of thalassaemia major or significant reduction in the prevalence of thalassaemia major in these countries. One of the primary reasons for prevention is the well being of existing thalassaemia major patients.
